Most step-in showers today have at least some barrier to step over to enter the shower. For some people,  even a small two inch step is enough to create a barrier preventing safe access.  Our goal is always maximum safety and barrier free access to all areas of the house, especially problem areas like the shower where a lot of falls occur.

We started by removing the existing fiberglass shower insert.  This gave us the ability to enlarge the floor space in the shower. The floor under the shower was slightly lowered to give us the ability to slope our floor for proper drainage. The floor and walls were rebuilt and tiled. A folding shower chair was permanently installed on the wall opposite the fixtures. A hand held shower and grab bars were added for comfort and added safety.

Vertical Platform Wheelchair Lift Elevator

Access Mobility Equipment has completed a vertical plaform wheelchair lift in the prestigious community of Fawn Lake in Spotsylvania, VA just west of Fredericksburg, Virginia.

A vertical platform lift (VPL) is sometimes also known as a porch lift, deck lift, or elevator.  Access Mobility Equipment provides vertical platorm lifts that are 100% Made in the USA.  Our VPLs are capable of carrying 750 pounds in the platform car.  Our lifts are primarily battery powered so that you never have to worry about a power outtage.  The batteries are always on continuous charge so they are never dead.   There are safety mechanisms in place to ensure that the lift will only move when the top entry gate is closed, and there are no obstructions under the platform as it lowers.

This particular customer initially called Access Mobility Equipment in Fredericksburg, VA to evaluate the residence for a wheelchair ramp.  The height to the entry door inside the garage was 58" which would require too lengthy of a ramp for inside the garage.   The height at the main front entry was even higher and more undesirable because of the appearance from curbside.   So, in this case a platform lift was a very good option,  The footprint of a platform lift is very small relative to the height of rise it can handle lifting straight up.

One challenge here was the steps went straight to the door so there was no landing or turning space coming off the lift and into the door.  Our crew removed the existing steps and constructed a 5' x 5' ADA Compliant landing at the door threshold level.  The steps were then added back to the platform on facing the same direction.  Finally we installed the lift so that the carriage ends on the side of the platform making for easy entry and exit for our customer using his wheelchair or walker,
